[Game] Star Traders 2 RPG - A Cocos 2D-X KickStarter!

Hi, I am Andrew Trese, one of the two brothers that comprise the full time staff of Trese Brothers. We have just launched a KickStarter for our third Cocos 2D-X game, Star Traders 2 RPG, the sequel to the hit space-opera RPG and trading sim on Android and iOS.

This will be our third Cocos 2D-X game and we are such a huge fan of the engine, its components, and extensions. You’ve helped us release to multiple platforms, get on Steam, and really tackle cross-platform development and beautiful 2D games in a major way!

In this open-world game, you will command your ship, hand-pick your crew, and roam freely through a complex universe with freedom of choice in your goals, morality, and career. The sequel to that RPG will expand upon the game in multiple dimensions by exploring both the big picture and little details. As a Captain, only your decisions will determine your fate – will you earn fame and riches, or infamy and a swift kick out of the airlock?

If funded, the space-opera RPG will include:

  • Multiple turn-based 2D game perspectives, following your Captain or
    ship. The ship views will include travel and ship on ship combat,
    while the views following your Captain will include landing on
    planets, visiting urban and wild areas, and boarding combat between
    two ships.
  • A mix of hand-crafted and procedurally generated maps will
    make the game different every time you play
  • Unique and individual
    characters for your crew, officers, and everyone you meet. The game’s
    unique Motivation Engine will create characters with interrelated
    traits, goals and prejudices and allows these characters, and your
    relationship with them, to grow and change over time and through game
    events
  • Modular ship design allowing you to upgrade your vessel to fit
    the needs of your profession, type of work and your crew
  • Realistic trade simulation, where you will build a trading strategy to
    capitalize on long distance trade routes, rare trade goods and supply
    and demand

We’ll be using Cocos 2D-X to release the game to Android, iOS, PC, Mac, and Linx. We’ve already got one Cocos 2D-X game on Steam, so we are hoping this will be our second or third.

Rewards include a 50% off pre-order of the game if you move quickly, and the ability to pre-order on multiple platforms.
Higher level rewards allow you to add your own creation (your Captain from the original Star Traders, an officer, a faction NPC, a legendary Captain, or an entire Quadrant!) to the game for all gamers to enjoy.

Thanks for your support. The Cocos 2D-X engine has let us pick up our development pace 10X easily. Not to mention the Spine 2D animation extension - also a complete winner!

Out of curiosity, are you guys developing the game in C++?

Yep, using C++ and Cocos 2DX. Very happy, now our third game on this setup.

no, we don’t use CocosStudio.

I’m always curious about other team’s assets pipeline. Thanks for the reply!

Absolutely - its great to learn from others. Is your team C++ and Cocos Studio?

We work with different technologies depending on the project. This ranges from Unity to Cocos2D with SpriteBuilder to Cocos2d-x C++ with custom tools. We’re not using CocosStudio ourselves as we’re mainly working with Macs and an OSX version has been recently released but it’s still missing some of the core features of the Windows version (primarily all the animation stuff)
